6045

Harrah (USA)

Sold to Tom Barrett of Scottsdale, Arizona. Sold to Dr. Hart Isaacs for $17,500 in April 1966. Accident on road. Car was seriously damaged. The remains were bought by Don Simpson. Remains sold to Ron Kellogg in California who sold the engine to Stuart Baumgard for his GTO (3987) and the rest to Dr. Hamilton Kelly. 1981: Some parts of the car were sold to Albert Obrist through Harley Cluxton. Chassis offered for sale in Italy. Minimum 3 replicas have been built with some parts. 2000 : One was for sale by a dealer in USA, another one was for sale in the same time by a dealer in Europe. 2002 Monterey Auction with the European car.

June 2006 : With regard to your web site and specifically in reference to the 250 LM 6045, please be advised that the car was definitelly not destroyed. I have photos of the car both before and after the accident. While the car was seriously damaged it was far from destroyed. In fact there was an ad after the accident in 1973 by Kellogg advertising the complete car for sale with all running gear, transaxel, suspension, etc. in perfect condition, noting only that the frame and engine needed work. I have a copy of this ad from the Ferrari owners club newsletter. When this car was purchased I went to Kellogg and paid $10, 000.00 to him to purchase all of his old photos and file which I have in my possession which clearly demonstrates the condition of the car. The engine block was sold and put into Stuart Baumgard's GTO. The entire rest of the car as a rolling chassis was sold not to Albert Obrist through Harley Cluxton, but in fact was sold to Massimo Colombo who sold the car to the Swiss Ferrari Dealer Graber Automobile AG who was at the time the authorized Swiss Ferrari dealer. On 6/7/86 the car was inspected by Gaetano Florini, at the time he was Director General of the Technical Assistance Department of Ferrari. The inspection took place at the Ferrari dealership in Cremona, Italy. Florini wrote that the chassis was correct and authorized William Vaccari to make necessary repairs to the chassis. I have a copy of this document as well as a copy of the repair bill by Vaccari. The repair invoice is #166 dated 30/10/87. I also have a letter hand written by William Vaccari on Ferrari stationary which confirms that the chassis was origianal and repaired by him. This was a document given in escrow upon the sale of the car to the Swiss Ferrari dealer for $1,200, 000.00 in 1988. I have declarations that this is true from the Cremona dealer and from Dino Cognolato where further inspections took place on behalf of the Swiss dealer.

The confusion comes when Richard Freshman purchased the engine block after it was removed from the GTO when it was restored in 1988, and then built a complete replica around the engine block. This is verified by the fact that on February 11, 1988 Richard Freshman writes to Massimo Colombo, owner of the real car, that he had engine 6045 less connecting rods, intake manifolds and distributors and wished to provide it for 50% ownership of 6045, and that if Colombo did not accept that he would build a replica around the engine block since he had in his possession LM 6023 and could copy same. Before any exchanges could be made the car was sold to the Swiss Ferrari dealer who acquired a new correct block from Ferrari and had a new engine built with the exact specifications as the original which was stamped 6045/2.

You state that a minimum of 3 replicas have been built. Since the year 2000 I have searched all possible leads and cannot find any other replica other than the one referenced above. There was an attempt to sell the above referenced car in 2002 at the RM auction in Monterey. My attorney contacted the auction house and the car was pulled from the auction as it was obviously a replica. The owner at that time agreed to advertise the car only as replica with a new chassis built by Fossil Motor Sports based on the original engine block. The only part of the replica that has merit is the engine block, the rest of the car was made up by Fossil Motors and Pete Roelof. Richard Freshman created a story that he received a piece of the rear cross member with a number. This is totally false as can be confirmed by documents in my file and by the inspection by the Ferrari Technical Assistance Department in 1986 which authorized the repair of the original chassis. (By the way, the repair was the equivilant of approximately $1, 200.00 USD when you do the conversion from Italian Lire.) I also have photos showing the chassis complete after the accident, at the time of export, at the time of import, at the time of inspection and at the time of restoration.

The original car has never been officially for sale since it's purchase in 2000, although there was a Ferrari broker in Italy who took it's picture and allegedly was trying to market it 3 years ago without authorization. I invite you when you have the time to be my guest and review a file box of documents, photos, correspondance, import/export documents, declarations, letters, bills of sale, etc.

I would appreciate it if you would make the necessary corrections to the misstatements of fact on your web site. If you would provide me with a fax number I could send to you some documents to support my statements, however the file is too voluminous to provide everything via fax.

Sincerely,
Gary
