Lotus 47 GT - 51 47-GT-51 was sold by the factory to John Nicholson without an engine (John had been racing 26R's for a few years and had a good engine) in early 1968. The car was a 47A and John competed in the Motoring News GT Championship where he was at one point beating the 2 works Gold Leaf cars. He had a big accident at Thruxton in August that year which resulted in the passenger door of the car being imbedded in the ARMCO up to the edge of the bonnet. He sold the car later that year still damaged for the sum of £1,500.00!
The car had various owners between then & now (Liverpool, and the Northeast mostly) who attempted to revive the car but only succeeded in raping it of many good bits, The engine was sold off, the gearbox was thrown away because of damage in the accident and all the dry sumping equipment was removed. a Renault engine was fitted and the body repaired and the car was road registered.
I bought the car in 1994 as a basket case, the damage caused to the chassis in the accident had not been repaired and the rear suspension geometry was all over the place.
Simon Hadfield re-jigged the back of the chassis and supplied a new gear change mechanism as the old one was missing (due to the change of gearbox.) I have made jigs from the drivers side suspension to replace the damaged parts and am gradually going through the bits to build a rolling chassis

At the 1972 Racing Car Show in London, the current owner met a friend who had
just found a Royale RP17 at the show. He wanted to buy the Royale bad enough to sell his Lotus 47...
The current owner , who was in London also to look at a TVR Tuscan that was for sale, bought the 47 instead.

In early 1973, he brought the 47 home. He then disassembled the car completely.
Despite the fact that the car had not been raced much, there was need for a quite extensive restoration.
The engine was rebuilt, the gear box casing was cracked and had to be replaced, all uniballs were
replaced (40 or so, some quite special - he claims that he's been to all uniball shops in England...) etc.
After close to one year the restoration was completed.

The previous owner had registered the 47 for road use three days before a new law - requiring destructive testing - was enforced in Sweden. That is quite unique - the 47 is after all a race car.
It was an advantage for the current owner; he could test the car on the road before the races
(and scare the hell out of the locals). That made the car very reliable and he has never had a DNF.

Lotus 47 GT - 75 This car was originally bought by Johannes Hekimian (Houston, Texas, USA) from Lotus Southwest.
The car was originally purchased without engine and a 1900 cc engine was built and installed.
The car was purchased with the intent of going endurance racing. A man named Robert Gary
was the race car promoter and picked up the Lotus from the UK with his WWII vintage plane
that had 50 caliber machine guns pointing out its nose. The 1900 cc engine was built by HRE
out of Dallas Texas USA.

The car won a lot of SCCA events with both Johannes Hekimian and Don Parks driving.
The car ran Sebring in March of 1969, but did not finish the race.

Lotus 47 GT - 76 The Paul Kerridge Lotus 47 is one of the more recognisable 47s from the late 60’s, and is certainly the most recognisable 47F.

The car was delivered to Paul in April 1968 in kit form, complete with Ford GT engine and Renault Gearbox. It was delivered on a Friday, built on the Saturday and raced for the first time on the Sunday, still wearing its grey primer.
Paul raced the car very successfully in Autocross, but found the Renault gearbox unreliable so fitted a Hewland MK9 (type). Paul also quickly replaced the ford cross flow with a 1650cc Lotus twin cams unit. Autosport from 1969 and 1970 is strewn with images of Paul in action as he was nearly always a front runner.

Lotus 47 GT - 84 In 1986-1989 the current owner was in Angola working for SIDA. In 1989 he and a friend traveled the country to find old cars left by the Portugese - not specifically race cars. They were told about this old race car owned by a fishmonger. In his store they found the 47. He told them that the car was worth a lot of money, but agreed to trade it for an old Volvo 240 and a few hundred dollars!
The fishmonger later delivered the car by simply driving it to the agreed location. According to the current owner it sounded like an old Beetle, but it was running! The current owner later found out that his 47 was one of those who had been "missing", i.e. its destiny had been unknown to those who keep track of these cars.
